KEITH MALCOLM TERRIL SWAN
Since attending Hurlstone Agricultural High New South Wales and first becoming involved in work in the pastoral industry, Keith Swan has had a close affinity with horses. It is for his contribution to the care of horses’ feet and to improvements in shoeing techniques that the equine industry today owes Keith Swan the greatest gratitude. His involvement with horses whilst jackerooing in New South Wales, and subsequently managing properties in the Longreach and Hughenden districts, has included competing in the show ring, being a pony club instructor and judging dressage events as a member of the Equestrian Federation of Australia. Throughout this time he has taken a special interest in the proper care of horses’ feet. Concerned at the number of shoeing problems he encountered, and realising how little he had been able to learn about the subject, Keith Swan arranged in 1976 to undertake a course at Bud Beaston’s Oklahoma Farriers College in the USA. After receiving his diploma, he established a farriery business in Townsville early in 1977 and started running weekend courses in horseshoeing. Over the next 20 years these extended to include week- long clinics held throughout Queensland, New South Wales and parts of the Northern Territory. In 1980, Keith Swan established his home and business at ‘Laguna’ in the Ipswich area and from here he has continued running regular clinics. His outgoing approach, persistance and love of imparting his knowledge of the farriers’ trade has led him to take up lecturing and administrative roles including, in 1990, becoming foundation president of the Australian Farriers’ and Blacksmiths’ Association Queensland Inc. Keith Swan has worked extremely hard to forge professional links with the veterinary profession and has been responsible for helping to bridge the gap between farriers and veterinary surgeons. Safe and sure-footed horses throughout Australia bear testimony to his passion and work.
