History of RASQ
The Royal Agricultural Society of Queensland (Toowoomba) is a not for profit organisation and has operated in the Darling Downs region for over 146 years. It was first established by a group of forward thinking gentlemen with a vision to promote agricultural excellence in the region. Outstanding statesmen and local businessmen, such as the Hon. James Taylor, G. Clark, G. Noble, A. Lavers. G.A. Godsall, A, Brinkworth, J. M Yates, B.J. Beirne, R. Sinclair, William Peak, William Kent, E. Blomfield, A. F. McWilliam and Mr. Rod Stirling have been the driving forces behind this long established association.
The showgrounds, which was established on the current grounds where the TAFE College stands, bordered by Bridge, Knight, Lindsay and Campbell Streets, held the Toowoomba Royal Show till 1985, at which time, due to parking problems and an increase in competitive sections, pushed the Society to move. Mr Mike Horan and Mr Rod Stirling, with the support of the Committee, sold off the existing site buildings and grounds and investigated alternative site areas, until a decision to purchase land at Glenvale was made. The Glenvale site offered more space, versatility, lower rainfall area and quality of venue. These grounds now hold, an extremely large open pavilion (3600 sq. mt.), a secondary open pavilion (1200sq. mt.); Goat, Sheep and Poultry Pavilions, Horse Selling Complex, Stabling Block, one of the largest indoor equestrian centres in the State, Cattle Pavilion, Function buildings, main administration block, catering facilities and supporting structures.
This outstanding facility built on 245 acres of scenic country land generates major economic growth and activity to Toowoomba and the region through the large number of events and functions, which utilise the venue.
The Royal Agricultural Society of Queensland organises the annual Toowoomba Royal Show, which draws over 14,500 exhibitors from all states across Australia to compete in our competitive sections.
